Background Information

The Library encourages the adoption of open access models that aim to lower overall costs for the academic community, such as green open access or publication in fully open access journals with low publication fees.

However, some publishers still do not allow the green OA, or allow it only with lengthy embargoes. The only way to publish in open access in some journals is to pay a publication fee (APC).

Unless stated otherwise, the discounts and APC exemptions shown on this page have been negotiated between certain publishers and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN), of which Polytechnique Montréal is a member, as are most Canadian universities.

Hybrid Journals

A gold hybrid journal publishes both closed-access articles (with no publication fee for authors) and open-access articles (with a publication fee for authors). Virtually all journals that are not completely open access are hybrids.

Publication charges are generally higher in hybrid journals than in open access journals (see Estimating global article processing charges paid to six publishers for open access between 2019 and 2023).

Although part of the articles in a hybrid journal are open access, and the APCs are an additional source of funding for the publisher, libraries must pay the same journal subscription costs to give their community access to the full content.
