Research Data

1. ORCID iDs and data management plans

Obtain an ORCID iD

"ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier (an ORCID iD) that you own and control, and that distinguishes you from every other researcher. You can connect your iD with your professional information — affiliations, grants, publications, peer review, and more. You can use your iD to share your information with other systems, ensuring you get recognition for all your contributions, saving you time and hassle, and reducing the risk of errors."

Data Management Plans

To ensure that other researchers will be able to understand and reuse your data, it is highly recommended that you create a data management plan.

The Digital Research Alliance of Canada (formerly the Portage Network), which "serves Canadian researchers, with the objective of advancing Canada’s position as a leader in the knowledge economy on the international stage", has created the DMP Assistant, which helps researchers make decisions on:

  • Data collection: data types, file formats, names, and organisation, version control;
  • Documentation and metadata;
  • Storage and backup: storage space and period, collaboration between members of the research team;
  • Data preservation;
  • Sharing and reuse, licenses, DOI;
  • Responsibilities and managing data costs;
  • Ethics and legal compliance to reuse (sensitive) data.

This plan should be revised throughout the project.

  • IMPORTANT: Use DMP Assistant's template!
