Patents are legal documents to which one or several classification codes are assigned. Searching for patents by classification can prove useful when initiating a search related to the technical field of an invention.
- Cooperative Patent ClassificationThe EPO (European Patent Office) and the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) developed a new joint classification in order to reconcile their classification systems. This classification has been in effect since January 1, 2013.
- International Patent Classification (IPC)An international hierarchical classification system to search patents according to the different areas of technology to which they pertain.
