Open Access

Gold and Green OA

There are two main ways to publish in open access: the gold road and the green road. In both cases, articles are accessible to readers free of charge.

Gold Road

Green Road

Definition

The article is freely accessible on the journal's website. It may be an open access journal or a hybrid journal - a journal that publishes both closed access articles (with no publication fee for authors) and open access articles (with a publication fee for authors).

The article is published in a scientific journal and a content-equivalent version (usually the accepted manuscript) is deposited in an institutional repository (e.g.PolyPublie) or disciplinary archive (e.g. arXiv, PubMed Central).

Fees

Generally, the authors have to pay the article processing charges (APCs) to publish.

Generally free of charge for authors.
Privileges @ Polytechnique

The Polytechnique community benefits from several discounts and exemptions from APCs.

The Library team uploads the document for you in PolyPublie, checks publishers' policies, and manages embargoes if necessary.

Licenses and permissions

Publishers allow certain licenses, usually the Creative Commons licenses.

Most of the time, publishers allow the green road, but often impose an embargo (i.e. they authorize the deposit only after a period ranging from a few months to a few years). This embargo may conflict with the funding agencies' policies.

The Journals by Department guide lists the journals in which the Polytechnique community publishes the most, and the open access publication paths available for each in order to comply with the policies of the funding agencies.

Other Publication Models

Diamond OA:

Open access journals with no publication fees (e.g. IFAC-PapersOnLine, Environmental Health Perspectives). In other words, they are free for readers and authors. For these journals, publication fees are paid by an association, organization, library consortium, etc.
Sometimes referred to as Platinum OA.

Bronze OA:

Article made available by the publisher on its website, for an indefinite period and without license or warranty. Bronze OA does not constitute open access under certain definitions of OA and does not comply with the granting agencies' policies.
