EndNote, BibTeX, Zotero: Managing Your References

The Library offers free BibTeX, EndNote and Zotero workshops and support to the Polytechnique community.

There are several free and paid bibliographic management software packages available. How do you choose the bibliographic management software that best suits your needs? Here is how to choose:

• Ideally, adopt the software used by members of your research group or department to facilitate collaboration with your colleagues.

Or

• Choose EndNote, which is available free of charge to the Polytechnique community, is installed in the labs, and for which the Library provides technical support. APA 7th edition and IEEE styles in French, translated and adapted by Polytechnique's Library, are available in the Endnote guide in French.
• If you prefer to use a simple and free tool, choose Zotero, for which there is also APA 7th edition and IEEE styles in French, translated and adapted by the Library, available via the Zotero guide in French.

If not,

• Establish your needs (e.g., sharing references with colleagues, working online) and consult the comparisons in the box on the left;
• Find out whether the software you are interested in is free of charge or not;
• Check the compatibility of the bibliographic management software with your operating system and word processing software;
• Consult online tutorials;
• Make certain there is technical support available on the Internet (software website, YouTube, discussion groups);
• Check whether a library created with a certain software can be exported in a format recognized by other bibliographic management software.
