Introduction

A standard is "a characteristic or set of characteristics for an item generally accepted by the manufacturers or users as the minimum required characteristic for all such items." (Termium, 2014).

According to the Standards Council of Canada, "standards are documents that describe the important features of a product, service or system." (2014).

Standards can be:

  • Voluntary standards, prepared by various stakeholders and implemented freely;
  • Mandatory standards, produced by a government when public safety is at risk.
