Introduction

A protocol is:

  • "A formal or official record of scientific experimental observations. A procedure for carrying out a scientific experiment" (Oxford, n.d.);
  • "The plan or set of steps to be followed in a study" (Termium, 2014).

The standard operating procedures are "established or prescribed methods to be followed routinely for the performance of designated operations or in designated situations—called also standing operating procedure" (Merriam-Webster, n.d.).

In the fields of clinical pharmacology and epidemiology, a research protocol is "the step-by-step procedure to follow in cases of research in the medical field" (Termium, 1983).
