Using Images

Citing the images you use

If you wish to use an image that you have not created yourself, make sure to follow the three steps outlined below. These steps should be followed regardless of the type of document (student assignment, thesis, dissertation, article, book, etc.) in which you would like to use the image.

  1. Make sure you have the right to use the image you selected by requesting, if necessary, permission to reuse the image from the copyright holder. To learn more, consult the "Using Images" section of this guide.
  2. After you have obtained the permission in writing, keep it in a safe place.
  3. Cite the image you have used following the citation rules in the author’s guide provided by the publisher of the journal in which you would like to publish or in the APA 6th Citation Guide, tab Figures and Images or the IEEE Citation Guide, tab Figures and Images. Please note that every image type has its own set of rules for citation; nevertheless, the Library citation guide includes several illustrated and detailed examples. If you are still not sure, feel free to contact us.
